Winter to Spring: Moving Out the Coats in our Closets

Here in CT, the weather was gorgeous this past weekend, 60+°F, and now 30°F predicted for this weekend. However, here in TangerineTeaWinterBee-land, we are optimistic for spring and we’re ready to switch out the winter coats for some spring fashion!

This is one of those lifestyle differences between us. Some is due to life stages, we think, and some is due to Pam being coat hoarder. Regardless of the number of coats you have, it’s like meeting up with a long-lost friend when you break out the spring jackets. And we just pretend we’re not freezing …

Winter Bee:

As mentioned I have a coat problem. I obsess over coats and jackets! Some I keep for years and years, it’s miraculous that they still fit!

The out-going winter coats:

This coat is my absolute favorite. It’s thrifted, from Style Encore in Findlay, OH. Loooove that store! It’s one of the few black items left in my closet, and I refuse to give it up! It’s starting to show it’s age, so I scour the internet for a replacement periodically. So if any of you are out and about and spot this coat- Old Navy, XL, alert me immediately!

I’m not a hat person in winter, so I always wear a scarf over my head. This blue with the animal print is fab. I also added this vintage sweater chain. It’s hard to see but they are little minks. So cute!

This is the casual coat- also thrifted from a local shop called Pennywise- it’s a puffy coat but not so much I look like a marshmallow. The snowflake pin was a gift, isn’t it lovely?

Everybody needs a get dirty coat! It’s a barn coat from L.L.Bean and it’s probably 18 years old. It just goes in the wash and comes out like new.

Now the dress coat! Thrifted from Goodwill, it was the 50% off color of the week so a grand total of $12.50. It’s wool and fully lined. (I looked up the brand when I got home and new would have retailed between $160-$180. Score!) I wanted a long coat I could wear with dresses and dress trousers in a neutral color. It was a little big through the shoulder and torso so I brought it to my local dressmaker and had it taken in. The alteration was very affordable and the fit is much better. Of course, I had to glam it up, so I picked up these stunning buttons and replaced the boring brown original ones!

Now the spring jackets!

Thrifted again! This bright yellow coat is so happy. I wear it gardening all the time and throw it in the wash and it cleans right up. It’s a great casual jacket, and warmer than it looks.

Jean jackets- I don’t want to say too much here because we have a plan for a future jean jacket post. I think jean jackets over dresses and skirts is a cute look, don’t you?

I spotted this adorable polka-dot rain jacket in Goodwill last November. It waited patiently to come out of the closet all this time. It’s just a nylon jacket, no lining, but I needed wanted a raincoat and I can’t stand the feel of those stiff, rubbery raincoats at all. This is perfect!

Oh darling CAbi Sloan Tweed coat that is rather tight across the shoulders and I have moved out the snaps to make more room across the middle and there is not a single size large in the internet universe for sale…This is the down side to thrifting, when you find something you ADORE, and and then something happens to it, or your size changes, and you can’t get another one.

And last but not least (I told you I had a coat problem), these two trench coats from Target. Classic lines but fun fabrics make these keepers for me.

Tangerine Tea:

Wow! Winter Bee, you look fabulous in all your different coats!

I do not have quite so many coats, but I have ones that I love.

This coat has been my main winter coat for the last few years, The faux-fur lining can come out to make this a lighter coat, although I may have only done that for one spring season. I absolutely love everything about this coat; the color, the way the hood can unzip to lay flat, and how cozy it is on a snowy winter day. Unfortunately, I am debating retiring this coat for good. It was bought from a fast fashion shop, and has lasted me longer than I could have dreamed.

I am a very nostolic person, especially for television shows. I bought this Official Saved by the Bell Tour jacket as my first big purchase after I started working my first job. Although the label says small, this jacket is big on me. Such was the style in the 90s. I love wearing it out to run errands when I want an oversize fit.

You have already seen one of my jean jackets. I do have another one, but I will also save that one for a later post!

I am definitely a one-and-done girl when it comes to coats, which is why my winter coat is starting to fall apart. I have never thought of coats as a priority in my wardrobe. Seeing Pam in all her different coats has truly inspired me to start looking at more coat possibilities!

Are you a coat hoarder or a basic one-and-done type of gal? Have you done the winter/spring switch yet? Let us know in the comments!
